Art + Feminism for
Medical Learners
Unit Two
Thinking With Pain
Learning Activities
1. Experience: Connect with three people who are not physicians, physicians-in-training, or individuals otherwise embedded in what Hedva calls the 'medical-industrial-complex.' Learn about how each of these people might tend to physical pain of some sort.
'Connecting' may include conversation, reading their blog, or remembering an encounter from your past. Some possible individuals may include: aestheticians, activists, mothers, fathers, grandmothers, friends, dancers, children. No need to judge their suggestions - simply acknowledge and take note.
2. Discuss: Thinking back to unit one, what are the power structures that determine how someone ends up and continues in pain? Consider clinical experiences you may have had and the stories of patients you may have met.
3. Reflect: Describe an experience of pain (physical, emotional, spiritual) in poem, prose, song, image, dance, etc.
