Art + Feminism for
Medical Learners
Unit Three
Violence
Learning Activities
1. Experience
Read up about your school's policy on sexual violence. Does your school have one? What does it include? What does it leave out? Is it sufficient? Compare it the policy of other schools; what is the same? What is different?
Learn about resources for students who have experienced sexual violence. What might be the barriers to accessing such resources? What are the successes of the resources; what are some possible failures?
2. Discuss
How do broader structures of violence, or oppression, create and perpetuate sexual, or gender-based violence?
What is restorative justice? Bring to the table an example of restorative justice from nearby (wherever you are). Why do you consider it one possible model for RJ?
How can art contribute, incite, inspire restorative justice? Thinking more broadly, what do each of the artworks in this unit say about gender-based violence?
3. Reflect
What do you know about yourself that might make you susceptible to compassion fatigue/vicarious trauma?
What has it been like for you to engage with the material of this unit?
