Unit One
Social Determinants of Art
Learning Activities
1. Experience

Go to your local art gallery and count how many works you find by women artists.

Find out how many women artists have been included in exhibitions in the past 5 years.

Do the women exhibited have anything in common?

Finally, find a local, contemporary woman artist, get a hold of her business card if possible, and hide a few of them in your city's major art institution.
Some art galleries in Hamilton: AGH, HAVN, Art Crawls, The Annex, Oswald's Gallery.
2. Discuss

What happens if, when thinking about social determinants of health, we think about 'sexism' rather than gender?

Or, 'racism' rather than 'race'?

3. Reflect

What is an artist's worth?

What is art worth to you?

What is the art in your life that's worth a lot, a little?
